Architectural Design Studio 1

Project 1: SELF EXPRESSION THROUGH OBJECT

In this project, students are required to produce an artwork in any form to represent themselves. I decided to do a painting of 4 panels describing the journey of my life as i grow older. The first picture describe me as a happy and care free kid, the second picture describe my sadness during my teen age and highschool life as i meet more obstacles in life. the third picture describe a new me, where i can smile and start to rise from my failure. the fourth picture describe me now, as a girl on fire who wants and believe in herself that she can be anything as long as she works hard.

I use acrylic and canvas as the medium. After gone through this project, I am able to identify the ideas of the ‘self’ and construct a representational piece of art based on the initial ideas that have been abstracted and redefined through the process of translation and interpretation.

Project 2: Self-Expression through Architectural Space

In this project, I am able to make use of the basic design knowledge to form a space. The space is all about where human experiences the spatial feelings.

In addition, I also successfully explore further on how to construct a structure in 1:1 scale with the consideration on techniques and materials.

The story of the space describes the trials and tribulations one goes through in the path of self discovery. The essence of this topsy turvy road that we humans

face is captured in the curves and bends of the space. Intangibles of loneliness and isolation are felt from the enclosed area. The space posseses obstacles of

varied size and posistions in the installation act as metaphors of different hurdles we would have to overcome in order to understand ourselves better.

Small light beams through the holes on the top that gives the idea that only little can be seen of this journey we travel by the people around us. The exterior

wall of the installation composed of cardboard panels one another expresses a sense of direction along the pathway, ultimately towards the goal of finding

our true self. Therefore, we have decided to name our installation DISCLOSURE. Disclosure is defined as the act of process of revealing or uncovering,

In this piece, we have created obstacles for the audience as the person overcomes the obstacles, they come out victorious.

Hence, revealing their true abilities.

Project 3: SPACE FOR SELF

In this project, we will be required to design a hideout space for self by r engaging it to the walls of an imagined “city” on an empty abandoned plot. For me

I choose the movie "STEAM BOY" as my city backdrop. The character I create is named Hazel Grace, she is a girl version of Ray steamboy. She is a passionate 13 years old girl living in Manchester. Her ambitions and devotions to machinery leads her to be an inventor just like her father and grandfather. Hazel is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve what she wants. Her life has been about adventures and journeys. She has got through countless dangerous moments and those experiences have made what she is now, a strong and independent girl.

I have created a dream space that embodies contrast as a concept. The design is made of two contrasting components combined to create two spaces within; a working space and a relaxing space. The working space is connected and attached to a factory and is designed to stimulate and increase productivity through the use of visual and environmental factors. The working space is a multi faceted structure covered with triangular sheets of aluminum that when combined creates many plans and edges. The busy facade of the working space will encourage productivity and is symbolic in contrast of hazel's strong personality. The relaxing space embodies a natural feel with rounded timber walls, grass, and skylight that creates shadows reminiscent of water. The relaxing space is designed to exude calm and evoke a sense of security or harmless within the occupant.
